Dame Dash has seemed to change his tune.
Roc-A-Fella Records agreed to settle their case against Damon Dash after he attempted to sell Jay-Z‘s “Reasonable Doubt” album as a non-fungible token, or NFT, according to TMZ.
According to legal documents, Damon Dash and his former record company agreed to terms on a settlement after Dame agreed that only Roc-A-Fella has the rights to sell an NFT of Jay-Z‘s hit album. An NFT is an asset that allows buyers to own an original piece of digital artwork.
As we previously reported last year, Roc-A-Fella’s legal team filed a lawsuit against Dame Dash, arguing that he was trying to “mint” ‘Reasonable Doubt’ as a non-fungible token in order to sell it to the highest bidder.
Upon being sued, Dash had plenty to say about his former friend and business partner, Jay-Z, telling Page Six last year:
“He thinks Roc-A-Fella records is his — it is ours — and he’s doing all this on Roc-A-Fella’s behalf. He’s got ‘only one man to eat’ syndrome and ‘everybody else got to work for him’ syndrome and ‘kiss the ring and we’re gonna mess up his reputation’ syndrome if you look under the hood. It continues to happen.”
They also argued that since the company owns it, not an individual shareholder, it was not Damon‘s to sell. This also means that Jay-Z cannot settle the album either. The recent settlement clarified that the only thing Dame can sell is his 1/3rd ownership in Roc-A-Fella Records.
The former business partners have been on the outs for years after the decline of Roc-A-Fella Records, but recent words from both sides sparked conversations that they could possibly mend their almost decades-long disagreements.
In October of last year, during his acceptance speech into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Jay-Z gave a nod to Dame Dash, saying:
“Shout out to Dame, I know we don’t see eye to eye, but I can never erase your accomplishments. And I appreciate you and I thank you for that. Shout out to Biggs. He was one of the most honorable people I’ve ever met and we created something that will probably never be duplicated. I appreciate you guys. Thank you for our journey. Thank you. Thank you for your contribution to this journey.”
Dame reposted the words from Jay-Z, and told Page Six at the time:
“It was beautiful. I’m glad he said it for the culture. We need to squash everything. So hopefully if that was an extended [olive branch] I’ll spin one back. I have no beef with [him] if [he has] no beef with me. Let’s get the lawyers out of it then. Let’s talk like men, but I definitely appreciate it.”
