Jay-Z Cried when His Mother Revealed She Was Gay

Jay Z was so happy when his mother Gloria came out to him as gay that he shed tears of joy. That is what the rapper told David Letterman during My Next Guest Needs No Introduction. Jay-Z said:

“I just, I cried, I don’t even believe in crying when you’re happy. I don’t even know what that is.”

Jay told David he already knew his mother was gay, but was so happy when she felt comfortable telling him. The New York native said:

“This was the first time we had the conversation, and the first time I heard her say she loved her partner. Like, “I feel like I love somebody.” She said, “I feel like.” She held that little bit back, still. She didn’t say, “I’m in love,” she said, “I feel like I love someone.” And I just, I cried. I don’t even believe in crying because you’re happy. I don’t even know what that is.”

And the father to Blue Ivy said he still wonders About his mother’s personal struggle before she came out. He told Letterman:

“Imagine having lived your life as someone else. And you think you’re protecting your kids. And for my mother to have to live as someone that she wasn’t and hide and like protect her kids, and didn’t want to embarrass her kids.

He added:

“For her to sit in front of me and tell me, “I think I love someone.” I mean, I really cried. That’s a real story. I cried because I was so happy for her that she was free.”

Jay’s real name is Shawn Carter. He was born in Brooklyn, New York to his mother Gloria and father Adnis Reeves. But his dad abandoned the family forcing Gloria to be a single parent. She raised Jay and his three siblings in Marcy Houses, a housing project in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood.

When Jay was a child he showed an interest in music so Gloria bought him a boom box. He then started rapping and earned the name Jazzy which later turned into Jay-Z then Jay Z. He often is seen taking his mother with him to high-profile events and on vacation.
