Kanye West is continuing to open up about his mental health.
Kanye West has quietly revealed he has bipolar disorder after years of unpredictable behaviour and a very public breakdown. During a recorded interview with radio host Big Boy following the 40-year-old rapper’s Wyoming listening party for his new album YE, Kanye confirmed that he had been “diagnosed with the mental condition” last year. West said:
“I had never been diagnosed until I was 39,”
After clarifying that he was diagnosed with the “mental condition,” West added:
“But like I said on the album, it’s not a disability, it’s a superpower. I’m so blessed and so privileged because think about people that have mental issues that are not Kanye West, that can’t go and make that [album] and make you feel like it’s all good,”
Although the musician declined to specify what he had been diagnosed with during the interview, West had already confirmed on his new album that he is bipolar, calling it his “superpower.”
Additionally, the album’s artwork, which West shot on the way to the listening party features an image of the mountains with a lime green text overlay reading:
“I hate being bipolar it’s awesome.”
Kanye, who went through a public breakdown in late 2016, also spoke about his fear doctors would kill him during his eight-day hospital stay, admitting he was paranoid they would drug him to death.
Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that affects moods, resulting in periods of mania and depression. Those living with bipolar can find themselves making grand plans, spending money they can’t afford and feeling very creative while in their manic episode, or experience suicidal thoughts and worthlessness during their depressive mood.
